The separation and classification of epithelial or neuroepithelial tumours is sometimes challenging, especially when treatment and prognosis are different. Squamous cell carcinoma, keratinizing or non-keratinizing and, usually, the poorly differentiated type need to be separated from sinonasal undifferentiated carcinoma, lymphoepithelial carcinoma, neuroendocrine carcinoma and olfactory neuroblastoma. Whereas melanoma and lymphoma are also included in the broad differential, along with primitive neuroectodermal tumours and rhabdomyosarcomas, the focus of this commentary will be to present the major clinical, radiographical, histological, immunohistochemical, ultrastructural and molecular features which allow for separation of the principle mucosal epithelial neoplasms of the sinonasal tract. & 2005 Elsevier Ltd. Sex Determining Region Y-Box 2 (SOX2) Amplification Is an Independent Indicator of Disease Recurrence in Sinonasal Cancer

OBJECTIVES The transcription factor SOX2 (3q26.3-q27) is an embryonic stem cell factor contributing to the induction of pluripotency in terminally differentiated somatic cells. Recently, amplification of the SOX2 gene locus has been described in squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of different organ sites. Aim of this study was to investigate amplification and expression status of SOX2 in sinonasal c...

Histopathology of sinonasal and lung cancers in nickel refinery workers.

Histopathological diagnoses were compiled for 100 sinonasal cancers and 259 lung cancers in nickel refinery workers, including cases from Wales, Canada, and Norway. The sinonasal cancers comprised squamous cell carcinomas (48 percent), anaplastic and undifferentiated carcinomas (39 percent), adenocarcinomas (6 percent), transitional cell carcinomas (3 percent), and other malignant tumors (4 per...

Sinonasal Carcinomas with Neuroendocrine Features: Histopathological Differentiation and Treatment Outcomes.

Objectives Sinonasal cancers with neuroendocrine features share similar clinical, radiological, and histopathological features; however, these tumors often exhibit varying degrees of aggressive behavior presenting significant treatment challenges. The objective of this study was to report our experience with these rare malignancies and to present a review of current literature. Methods Followin...

Esthesioneuroblastoma, Neuroendocrine Carcinoma, and Sinonasal Undifferentiated Carcinoma: Differentiation in Diagnosis and Treatment

Introduction Malignant sinonasal tumors comprise less than 1% of all neoplasms. A wide variety of tumors occurring primarily in this site can present with an undifferentiated or poorly differentiated morphology. Among them are esthesioneuroblastomas, sinonasal undifferentiated carcinomas, and neuroendocrine carcinomas. Objectives We will discuss diagnostic strategies, recent advances in immunoh...

Human papillomavirus in sinonasal inverted

Background and Purpose: a substantial number of studies have reported evidence on the involvement of human papillomaviruses (HPV) in oral and sinonasal papillomas and carcinomas. Oncogenic HPV subtypes 16 and 18 seem to play an important role in carcinogenesis, whereas low risk HPV subtypes 6 and 11 are usually characteristic of benign lesions. The aim of the present study was to evaluate a rol...

HPV infections in benign and malignant sinonasal lesions.

This review updates the evidence that the human papillomavirus (HPV) is involved in the development of benign and malignant sinonasal lesions. Since the early 1980s, when evidence was provided on the possible involvement of HPV in the aetiology of both benign respiratory papillomas and squamous cell carcinomas, a substantial number of studies have explored this issue. To date, 33.3% of sinonasa...
